Hillclimb in Emmaus or Macungie in the 60's?

Post by rallynutdon »

Talking to an old friend today who started attending hillclimbs before me. He remembers a hillclimb in either Emmaus or Macungie in the 60's. I was born and raised in Emmaus and basicly lived in the area until 1970 and am not familiar with any event. The first hillclimb I was exposed to was Fleetwood in the 60's. A neighbor was Ronnie Brobst who ran a vette in the 60s. Any info is appreciated.

What are the chances they are thinking of Topton?

No chance. He was born and raised in Pennside (Reading). I worked with him in Topton in 1969. He said it started only a block or 2 off of main street. Dave Sekella, who has lived in Fleetwood all his life (and is my age, owns Susquehanna Motorsports) seems to remember it, but no details.

There were many other hill climbs that did not fall under the PHA....I've seen stuff from all kinds of hills sponsored by Mustang & Corvette clubs, etc....must have been one of those?

I had already mentioned that one to him but he said no! IIRC, that was over in Hellertown area (I was never there)?

Marc's insight...

Hi Ron:
I just joined the forum, so cannot answer your email just yet on that venue. However, I'll try here, and maybe you could post my comments. When we, at Town & Country Sports Car Club, were looking for a site, nothing was ruled out. That Club was based in Allentown, and we looked everywhere within a commuting distance from that city. That's how we got to Topton, BTW. To the best of my recollection, we never found a suitable site in either Emmaus or Macungie. So, of course, there never was a hillclimb in either of those two towns. I also cannot remember any of the other non-PHA clubs putting one on. Most of us, at one time or another, ran those so-called outlaw events, and we would have known of such an event. I go back to 1963 as a member, so I hope that's far enough. BTW, Springtown was held on the outskirts of that town, and was put on by the Warhampton Motor Club. I joined that Club at the Springtown event, since in order to belong you had to go to one meeting and an event. That last Springtown event was where I took my wife, Eunice, on our very first date, so I'm firm on that time frame. And, that's nowhere near the other two towns. Hope this helps.

Fleetwood was very close to town, IIRC they used part of a residential street as pit/paddock.

And depending what your definition of "close" is, it's kinda close to Macungie...
