Re: Topton, PA hillclimb

Topton Hillclimb, last run 1970. Tower road, start just after the creek off Home Rd. Pits on the field on the left before the creek. Ran to just short of Woodside Ave. Doctors house was at the sharp left before Woodside.

Re: NY Times article mentions 1975 Duryea

Interesting. I remember the crash but not the name. He hit the wall by the pits. At that time I think we still were stopping and turning into the pits which is probably why he hit the brakes. I guess it was his first and only time on a hill.

Problem with that link is it doesn't show enough detail. It doesn't even show Mertztown (try it). :(

Don't know how to do a link to the the map. Topton Hillclimb actually started closer to Mertztown than Topton. Use map quest (or something else) and go south of Mertztown. It ran on Tower road, start line was just after the intersection with Home Road (just after the creek) till just before Woodside...

Thanks for the information. The price of running hillclimb was one of the factors that attracted me to the PHA series from rally, which the cost of running a stage rally can run $1,000 just for an entry fee! Which is just ridiculous. I may give rally a go or road-racing after the PHA season...

You're right on both counts. I thought of Jack Strouses name about an hour ago. See, the brain still does work at this age, just a little slower (much more memory to scan and the processor is getting worn out).

Old timers, whats this guys name?

Ran in the early 70s. From Cogan Station (north of Willimasport). Owned a pipeline company (installed cross contry pipeline). Ran Cobra(s) and brought 2 of them on a flat bed tractor trailer IIRC (or am I confusing that with the guy that had a trucking company with the slogan, "If you got it, a...

Hyner View, I've never heard of that one and I've been around the hills since 63 but really got involved heavily in 70. Was the hill at Hyner up above route 80? Where exactly. My grandfather was born in a logging camp in Hyner so I have some interest in the area. Thanks.

Now, where are we going to train people if not on a hill if as soon as they get on a hill they are only going to be overconfident? Or do we require everyone start with a slow car? That is what Rally America (who took over from SCCA) has done! And in your example if a 19 year old novice were to ever...

The mapquest way (which I suspect is the way Tim went) is the best for towing. I went that way last year and it wasn't bad (not towing though) 6 to 7 hours should do it. I'll be towing it for the rally this year. How do you guys figure $400 for gas? It's 350 miles one way at 10 mpg at $3.00 a gallon...

A web site/forum with information on who to contact for information (for each event) and a form to sign up to work wouldn't hurt. When I was thinking of signing up to work Duryea I could find nothing on line so I said the heck with it. In this day and age it should be a prioroty IMHO.
