Novice going to participate in hill climb this weekend.

Post by sab0276 »

So Jeff (JekylAndHyde) final convinced me to come and try out hillclimbing.

I have been doing autocrosses for over 7 years, but kind of got bored of it so I started doing track events a few years ago.

What all is required to hill climb?
I have a 93 MR2 Turbo (similar to Jeff's, but a lot less power). I have a 6-point roll bar, FIA seats, harnesses, 3lb fire extinguisher, SA2005 helmet, multi-layer fire suit, Piloti nomex lined shoes, nomex socks, gloves, and arm restraints.

Is there anything special I need to know about since I am a novice at this?

Hey Scott,

For your first 3 events you need to put novice stripes on each side of your car toward the rear. It just let's the course workers know that you are new. You can see mine on the rear spoiler here:

My daughter will be a novice at this hill also. She's been to it but never driven.

Don't forget, Life Insurance paid up, completed up to date will, notify next of kin, medical forms filled out?... Just kidding, but do be safe and have fun. Everyone there will help you thru the rest. Oh yeah! Bring money. I'm not kidding. Have your check book ready. Pit crew also helps but not necessary. (You end up having to feed them too.)

Dave is not kidding about the money part. After you sign up with SCCA, pay for the novice permit, and then pay the entry fee you are looking at close to $300.

Make sure all your paperwork is filled out and ready to go before you leave your house.

And HAVE FUN!!!!! :D

Thanks guys. I kinda figured it would be about that much. Still cheaper than a track day though!
See you guys Saturday.

If this your first event or you are a novice at this event you are required to do tech and registration Fri night. This is in the supps and is REQUIRED. Unless you have made prior arrengements with Matt Rowe.

Rick,

I didn't find the requirement for a required Friday Tech in the Supps. This may impact me as well.

Thanks,
Brian

It's usually listed under "schedule of events" on the first page of the entry forms, but it does not appear to be on the Rose Valley form.

If you look at the regular entry form for Duryea,
you will see it is one of the first things listed.

I see what your saying. It looks like it was not added to the R/V entry form.
Good thing, since I may be showing up late (long story that I hope has a good ending!).

The problem with not doing Firday tech and Registration as a novice is that if you try to do it Sat morning you will not make novice orientation which would not allow you to compete!
If you do the novice orientation and than do registration and tech on Sat you will miss the touring runs (required for novice). Again no runs.
Not taking care of the paper work on Fri. causes all kinds of trouble for you, which you as a novice do not need as it is stressful enough if done properly.
As a novice you want to be ready to go Sat morning when orientation starts. From a safety point you want to concentrate on the hill Sat and not have to have many other items causing you stress. The object is to get you up the hill safely, which you cannot do if rushed and stressed out by trying to do too many things at the last second.
I have not even thrown in the car preparation needed on Sat morning.
