I'm new to roll bars and cages and I see some discussion about ERW not being allowed and DOM is allowed here on the forum, but what is ERW and DOM and what's the difference and how do I tell if my cage is DOM?

Hey Herb!
Try these to web sites for info.
http://www.safetydevices.com/content/view/29/49/
http://www.racefabinc.com/rollcages.htm
http://performanceutilityvehicles.com/p ... prices.htm
Half way down the racefab page it has under Safety Tip that ERW has a visable seam running down in.
Hope this helps.

ERW stands for electric resistance welded. That tubing is basically a sheet of steel roled into a tube and welded along the seam.
DOM (which I believe actually starts out similar to ERW) is drawn through a mandrel (Drawn On Mandrel) to somehow reduce the stress riser that would normally be at the seam.
Hey, is Dillsburg Aeroplane works still open? I've tried calling a couple of times to order some large diameter DOM and I can never get through. The phone number I have for them comes up as disconnected, and the fax number just rings and rings and rings.....

I'll check, I have bought diamond plate from them in the past, but it's been a while. I need some DOM tubing so I will have to go over there anyway. I'll check tomorrow.
