Daphne S. Heide passes away

Post by Ron Mann »

Some of you old Schoolers may remember...

Daphne raced the PHA circuit with her husband George in the early to mid 70's. She drove a Fiat in G Production and later a Porsche 914 in Show Room Stock.

Daphne was a charter member of the PA region of the PCA.

One of the nicest ladies you could meet...

Ron,

You forgot to mention that Daphne usually beat George. She was also an excellent autocrosser in the orange 914. I believe that she and George also shared Charlie Beidler's Porsche 1300 Coupe in G Production. Otherwise, a sweet lady with a great personality.

That she was. My recollections of her for the past 30+ years was of her very kind nature....and after George would analyze the humidity, barometric pressure, and pavement temperature, adjust tire pressures and carb jetting accordingly, Daphne would just go beat him anyway.
My recollections also (the article confirms) she was a war bride after meeting George in her native England (he was in the US Army Air Corps).

Attached is a link to the Central PA Porche Club newletter with an article by Dennis Frick (also a former Hillclimber) on Daphne. The last time I saw Daphne was at the actual "Parade" of Porsches in Hershey. I was organizing vehicles and sent Daphne to the front of the Parade with Peter Porsche and the Parade chairmen. She was always an enthusiastic participant in our club activities. She will be missed.

Awesome article. I wish I could have met these racers. They both appeared to have been characters!

Condolences to the family, and, the next Yeungling will toast our fallen hillclimber.

I remember George & Daphne from many years of auto-x's when I was young. She was always a wonderfully kind person. :(
