From what I hear, it is 2.2 miles long ... Duryea is 2.3.
So what is the longest paved hill climb in North America?

Anybody run in the event above?

Besides which, it's not the length that counts, it's the number of cars you've had run up it... (make your own metaphor here...)

Mt. Equinox VT. is 6 miles with a mile long straightaway on a saddle between the two peaks. Awesome, but it's only for vintage cars now. We've run it about 6 times, some years you can't race to the top because of fog. Being on the top with lightning below you is quite a sight. Sue

Size DOES matter!

Actually you may have seen pictures of Duryea starting on the street below the current start line.

Giants also started further down the street than where it does now...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND Rose Valley finished around the corner from the current Finish line (Tom Hartman won the Touring 2 championship in 1969 or 70 on his roof after cutting the last corner a bit close)

I think Giants is the oldest running hill climb in the US I haven't found anything older that is still running anyway. Anyone know any different?

The "Climb to the Clouds" hillclimb on the 7.4-mile course up the Mount Washington Auto Road at Mount Washington, New Hampshire is the oldest motorsport event in North America, and was first run in 1904. However, this climb has been held only sporadically since 1961.

BTW. We hope to compete for the longest hillclimb, hopefully in the next year or two. The local guys (Laurel Springs VFD) are working on getting the road paved all the way up to the cell phone towers (those of you whom have been down to BR, when you were standing the pits, and looked at the towers on top of the mountain!!). This would put us 2+ miles. Not sure of the exact length, but, the course would be super exciting. Some very nice curves would be added, as well as the last section would be as steep of grade as Giants, if not steeper!

Longer is better I guess, but it is much more involved. The problem is to find enough people to work. Because the competitor needs to be seen by at least 1 corner worker station from start to finish. In 2 miles you may need quite a few.

I've actually been up that road. however, it can't be accused of being paved all the way up.

But of course, the layout a particular course could require more or less...

I'd gladly start Duryea in the park. I love to see them try to have a spanish rally in the pits!

Paved? No.

Guard rail? Are you kidding?

Oh, and from what I've seen, the helicopter that is sometimes there for TV coverage is useful for seeing where a car stops after it rolls of the cliff. This is a pretty hardcore hill.

If you've ever seen footage from the upper half of Pike's Peak, this looks similar.

I think Mom has footage of it from when Patty & her went up to inspect it to start racing again. Looked very interesting & the TV coverage is always Great!!

Knox is 2.2 Miles, as are Hoopa, Bible Creek, and Larison Rock. I'm pretty sure that Virginia City would be the longest fully paved hillclimb at 5.2 miles.

it seems that 2.x miles is the norm, we have a couple longer ones up here
ascutney1 (short course) 3.4mi
ascutney2 (long course) 4.2 mi (iirc)
okemo is aound 2.7
burke is like 2.4
philo is our short but sweet run, right around a mile
washington is vintage only these days when they run it

hkk motorsports, pardon me if I am mistaken, but my understanding is that your hill climb series does not allow street cars with roll bars.
Myunderstanding is that you have to either have nothing or a full cage.

Is that true? ... If so why?

There are at least two of us that would love to do some of your events, but are not going to a full cage any time soon.

it all depends on what class you are in, the only hill that has a mandatory cage rule is ascutney, i run in prepared ( vw jetta, fully stripped, race prepped) for strret legal type cars you are looking at streep prepared or unprepared ( stock), no cage required in unprepared, and iirc streep prepared requires a cage, best bet is to check out http://www.hillclimb.org, complete rules are there as well as class guidelines, but yes you CAN run a street car w/ a cage (they are HIGHLY recommended as we have some pretty hardcore terrian, LOTS of trees and ledges)
at our rules meeting this year the mandatory cage rule for all cars/all hills got shot down

there are a couple of us who plan on coming down to some of your events this season, trying to figure out classes and the whole license/pa hc membership thing now
