Sad News - Weatherly Teenager Killed in Car Crash

Post by Mary Anne Fieux »

There is some sad news to share after we have been without power from Saturday afternoon to late last night due to the snow storm. Fortunately we were running the fridge and TV on the generator, but we only received intermittent TV satellite service, even after the storm. During one of the times we had TV service, we saw this bad news, hence the October 28 date of the accident and the late posting of the news.

Anyway, just thought I'd share this sad news due to the close connection PHA has with the town of Weatherly. It's just so sad one boy died, the other 2 boys were hurt in the car accident. On the local TV news a fellow classmate from Weatherly High School was interviewed and he stated the senior class is a small group, only 51 in the entire class. Perhaps PHA can do something regarding a donation to the Weatherly Little League Association or Eurana Park Association as noted in the obituary? My prayers go out to his family and friends, a life gone too soon. I also hope the other boys involved in the accident are going to be OK.

The following is the Times Leader newspaper article:

Weatherly teenager killed in car crash Police Blotter

PACKER TWP. – A 17-year-old boy was killed in a car crash Friday afternoon on Wetzel Run Road in Carbon County, state police said.

Carl Bittner of Weatherly was a passenger in a Ford Mustang driven by Matthew Cullen, 17, also of Weatherly.

The car was traveling west when it went off the roadway around 2:40 p.m., struck a large rock and rolled onto its roof.

Cullen and another passenger, Christopher Lafey, 17, of Weatherly, were flown by helicopter to St. Luke’s hospital in Bethlehem for treatment of injuries.

The crash investigation continues to determine the cause of the boy’s death. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact state police in Hazleton at 570 459-3890.

Wow, in a no comment sort of way.

And I thought the town of Weatherly, the Weatherly Hillclimb Association, and yes, the Weatherly Little League Association was like family to the PHA. I would even bet the boy who passed away and the injured boys walked the pits at some time in their lives. Oh well.
