Weatherly Pits
Anyone have a pit map? Any changes from last year? I sure hope so - the spaces for enclosed trailers were so tight we had to open the side door before we parked. You had to turn sideways to walk between our trailer & the next; not even enough room to swing the jack handle to level. I'm dreading the tension of trying to find a spot for our 52 feet & 2 race cars. Sue

Re: Weatherly Pits
Sue, all of this must be a secret! I've talked to a couple of people and there are conflicting stories.
Chuck and I will be corner working and we need to know where we can park a "SAAB-free" trailer which serves as our lodging. Being dry at night is nice if it rains! (NOTE: rain is a 4 letter word) This is especially true after being on a corner all day. Right now we are waiting to hear where we can park so we don't have to move the trailer after being setup.
I understand the volunteers at Weatherly are working like dogs (as usual, God bless them!) to get ready. They are still trying to make the pit area larger for drivers and rigs, etc. The expanded pit area is in the process of being filled to create a more stable surface. Other than that, I don't know what's up.
As I said, we just need to know where 2 workers can park their "hotel". We really don't want to be banished to the foundry. Then we would have to disconnect the tow vehicle and use it to get to the start line for the workers meeting, etc. I believe they are trying to decrease the number of non-driver cars on the street, pit road, etc. Having the trailer behind timing would be OK and eliminate the need for foundry transport service. However, I understand that area is now an expanded vendor area and therefore I don't know if the trailer would fit up near the woods behind timing.
I hope someone chimes in here with some answers. Some answers are dependent upon what work gets finished this week by the volunteers who are busting their knuckles to be ready for Saturday.
Can't wait to see everyone and sniff cars!

Re: Weatherly Pits
I just returned from Weatherly and Joe Cyburt, the event organizer asked me to communicate the following to all entrants and workers:
1. The pit area is being extended further into the woods to provide more room for the entrants.
2. NO RACE CARS, TRAILERS OR VEHICLES ARE TO PARK IN THE GRASSY AREA WHERE THE LARGE VENDOR TENT IS LOCATED.
3. There is room in the grassy area for tents, but again, no vehicles.
4. The pit area is for race cars. The far end of the pits is designed to accommodate closed trailers with race cars. The space will be as wide as last year. If you would like more space for doors, canopies, etc. it is suggested that you park at the foundry. The foundry is closing at noon on Friday so there will be adequate space to accommodate those who choose to utilize this area. ALL OPEN TRAILERS ARE TO BE PARKED AT THE FOUNDRY.
5. Joe said if you show up complaining about the accommodations, you should not be surprised to be asked to leave.
The Weatherly people continue to do an outstanding job and are constantly improving the site and event. We are guests in this community and we must follow the rules they establish. I for one are thankful for what they do for all of us. The rules are established to best utilize the available space for all.
Also, the return road will be used and it appears to have a stable surface.

Re: Weatherly Pits
Thanks Tom,
I am returning to the hills and Weatherly from nearly two decades (yikes i'm old now(wth) of playing with other toys.
I will be bringing a new car and enclosed trailer. Knowing this today is good. Knowing what it was like in the early 90's when I chaired the hill it has come a long, long way.
What time will things get started there on Friday to come in, the Foundry lets out at 12 but are the parking areas open sooner?
I Look forward to seeing a lot of old and new friends this weekend,
Bill Carroll

someone told me that many people talk about it, few actually do it, I didn't know there was an option! Go Racing, work a corner, be part of it.

I couldn't help myself. It's way early and I worked a lot of hours yesterday and am back up again to head BACK into the city. Can't wait to get up to Weatherly though.
Thank god that under #5 of the rules it only states you'll be 'asked' to leave. At least I have the option of staying or leaving. Whew! Got a little worried there.
On a serious note, I've put larger tires on the Mach. I'm asking the corner station workers to just take notice of us coming thru the corners. If you see any smoke coming from the tires, please let me know. Although I think I have the clearance issues worked out, I don't know how much sway there is in the sidewalls. The fenders have been rolled and pulled but I'm pretty close to the strut. Thanks in advance.
RIP Joe, my friend.

Yeah I'm sure the smoke would come from rubbing, and not from you roasting the tires.mrevilracing wrote:On a serious note, I've put larger tires on the Mach. Re: Weatherly Pits
No tire rub as far as I could tell. So I'm happy.
The folks up at Weatherly did a nice job on the pits. Seems they really extended into the woods and looked like quite a few got their trailers in there with no issues at all. The stones are still a small issue with us. But I noticed that if they stay wet, they don't stick as much.
Even with the rain, we had a great time. I even drove in the downpour. What a hoot that was. Scary but fun. Thanks to the Weatherly citizens for coming out to spectate and thanks to Joe and all that helped with the planning and set up. If you didn't go, you missed a good time.

Re: Weatherly Pits
Another fine job by all the organizers of Weatherly, Carol, Dan, Joe, Tom, Nelson, Matt, Jen, Gail and the Weatherly Hill Climb Association for a great event. Also thanks to all the workers who weathered the heat and rain so we could go play. And I can't forget Grace for helping set up the wireless timing and for making me a Great cup of coffee Sunday Morning. Also congratulations to George "THE MAN" Bowland for his very very fast FTD run. If memory serves he was only 8/10's off the Hill Record, "and that's hauling ass." The increased pit area really was a big improvement and who knows what is coming next? Once again thanks to all for a fantastic event.

Re: Weatherly Pits
Having taken two decades off from hillclimbs and as a former chairman of the hill I was amazed at the whole weekend. Organization, improvements way beyond what i ever imagined, a meal and a great fireworks show. I want to thank everyone who contributed to the weekend and allowed those of us to drive the hill. I had a chance to talk to corner workers, organizers and many spectators, very positive. It was great to see Weatherly in such a good position.
..... a round of applause for the effort and dedication put into this weekend.
I won't wait so long again, I'll be back, and with the right tires and gears next time.

Not running on a tire that could handle in the rain was a 1st for me. I didn't know what to expect and the guardrails got pretty big when I laid on the brakes and nothing happened. LOL! The only bummer was I didn't get any air over the jump.gdh57 wrote:Welcome to the dark sidemrevilracing wrote:...Even with the rain, we had a great time. I even drove in the downpour. But who was the guy at the finish line? Why were you ducking back every time I came around that corner????!!! Even when it was dry. I couldn't even go that fast. I would glance in the rear view each time to see if someone/thing was behind me.
RIP Joe, my friend.

Re: Weatherly Pits
This was my first time at Weatherly, and I had a blast (I'm sure you will here me say that about nearly every hill this year, with the exception of Pagoda as it will be my second time there, but I will still have a blast). The hill was challenging and fun. It was fun running in the rain, and it even dried out a little so I could set my fastest time. Thanks to everyone who gave me pointers and gave me the courage to go flat over the the jump. Loved the atmosphere at Weatherly it was great seeing the town so excited to have us there. See everyone in less than 2 weeks!

Well, Ryan, if you think the folks at Weatherly are enthusiastic, be sure to come to Giant's Despair. You'll be offered your first beer from the crowd at "Devil's Elbow" by 10:00 AM.....

I was checking out the results. I'm guessing the weather wasn't good for both days?
Steve from last year!
The course is great. Fast. Smooth. Did I say fast? No reason to have any records standing after Spring Weatherly '10. They should ALL be broken with ease. Go get 'em!
