Of those events I entered to which I have the results from before the club gave DP the boot Ray Heisey took the most first places and the '71 and '72 PHA DP Championship. Keith Kendig came second and took the '69 and '70 championships. I think his career started earlier and he may have won more. Mike Farling came third and won the NEDIV championship. So what you may say, we are talking about PHA. Well, the entire NEDIV championship table seemed to be populated by our people. (Mel Horn was HP champ, I was C/S champ, for instance.) Eric Altman and Pete LoBianco were the only other drivers with more than three wins.

That's my photo of Mike at Schafferstown. The smoke from front lock up made it memorable.

Every time I think of Keith Kendig, I am reminded of how valuable it is to have good safety workers at the turns. Keith crashed hard at the first turn at Hershey, and they got him out of his car and he had serious trouble breathing. An ALERT worker, probably EMT or fireman, checked his airway and found a dental plate jammed in there cutting off his air. He reached in with his finger and dislodged the plate and all was well....except the car which appeared to be a ball of tinfoil. Drivers, if you wear dentures, take them out before competing!

Funny you bring that up...Keith is following this thread and emailed me:

"I crashed my car at Hersey because I wanted to win the D prod championship 4 times in a row because nobody had ever done that before. I had a good enough run the first run to win and make the 4th in a row. I had brought a lower gear ratio to beat some of the Corvette guys. I decided to make a very quick run and then change the rear end. This way I would see how much difference the lower rear end would make. I really believed I would be able to beat some of them. I thought it would have been great to have a TR have either the fastest time of the day or at least close to it. The rest is history. God was with me because I hit a tree doing about 70mph. I wiped out my Tullius TR 4A but I am still here. I did believe in Jesus Christ before this accident. If I wouldn't have I am sure I would have after that accident."

We all heard about Keith's dentures at the time. The supps have mentioned not running with removable dentures in place ever since. I assumed it was in Keith's "honor".
