Here is one for the "MG Purists"
William Bieber of Doylestown PA showed up at the 1966 Fall Hershey event in this Corvette powered MG….he ran 6th out of 11, which would have been a 58.541 for those familiar with Hershey and current times.

Re: Those Great Specials...
Here is a special, special. The Brand X racer….this car was built by Joe Christ (Father of Chuck) with a Begra (Gene Beach & Henry Grady) body and a home built chassis copied from an Elva. It ran in Modified 1 or H Sports Racer between 1967 & 1968. I have a few finishes to report:
1967 it placed 2nd at Fall Hershey, 3rd at Rose Valley and 1st at Weatherly
1968 it was 6th at Spring Hershey (placing behind other cars on this thread including the Cornpicker & Stinsmen's Simca Genie)
The car exchanged some hands and ended up back in the hands of Chuck Christ who brings it out now and then.

Has anyone ever heard of the "Ferro Special"? A fellow named William Ferro entered it in the 1955 Breakneck HC. A forerunner of our own George Bowland?

Ron, the Fageol machine (?) also showed up at the Cumberland Nationals on May 16, 1954.Ron Mann wrote:Here is another interesting one! 1954 Giant's Despair, Lou Fageol ran this interesting Porsche based special in the C Modified class!
Here is a photo of the car in action. It is not the best picture, but there is no mistaking the Fageol car. Wonder where it is today ?

photo#1 depicts "brand x" as aquired in S&J roadracing's colors and markings with a legrand Mk16 or 18 body that was heavily modified.
photo #2 is an interior shot of "brand x" prior to it's complete restoration back to the way it was in 1967 with a few aditions such as a modern rollbar , seat , belts and two fuel cells. it took a few years to find enough of the original parts to reconstruct the car, then restoration was started. this was not a job for the faint of heart!

Re: Those Great Specials...
Here is a special found on the Sports Racer Network
Walter P. Martin lived in Roaring Springs, Pennsylvania and was employed as a shop instructor for a local trades college. In February 1958, an idea formed within the group to build a race car. By May it was finished ... just. Fiberglass for the body had not been delivered, so a 3/8" mesh was molded and overlaid by strips of industrial toweling soaked in white glue. Hence the unofficial name, Paper Mache Special. The students preferred Future Craftsmen of America No. 1, or FCA-1.
Specifics of the car include right hand drive, no headlights, driver windscreen, small tube frame not exactly triangulated...but sturdy enough. The front suspension was a rigid tube axle with braces, to which were fastened a leading quarter elliptic leaf spring over and leading rod under on each side. The rear was mirrored but with the springs/rods trailing rather than leading. Axles, engine, and gearbox were Crosley, massaged in the fashion of the day. A hoop rollbar with single brace was installed.
An early event was at Giant's Despair Hillclimb, where it was 2nd in class. Although sturdy enough to avoid damage from rain and sandbank collisions, the car did not seem to do well.
"This or that" problem plagued the machine until it disappeared into the night and fog.
This car has yet to be re-discovered.

Re: Those Great Specials...
Our newly recovered infomation on the 1956 Breakneck National includes some details of a "Morvette", that apparent creation of one Roger Wing - who wedged a late model Corvette engine into a Morris Minor. Looks like he ran in CM1. Does "Roger Wing" appear at Giant's Despair or other events?

Re: Those Great Specials...
It's been a while since I posted a new car here…so…here we go!
Mr. Bill Shields came up with this Modified 1 car in the early 70's. Based mostly on a Triumph Spitfire. The original wedge shape gave way to a "Lotus 7ish" body later.

Here is one from the not so distant past...Ed Velez and his Special 3 Mazda. 2000-2003...he racked up quite a few class wins. So...for those that remember it...was there an engine swap here??

Re: Those Great Specials...
I think it was a 302 Ford. I have some video that is good for comic relief. Do we bring up the story of the roll bar or cage made up of muffler pipe?

Re: Those Great Specials...
Here is another machine from the Jack Chappell stable. It was called the Goose II a Corvair powered car. It was driven by John Bolton in the 1973 season where it was at almost every hill that year. It's best finish was at Pagoda where it took first. Modified 2 class was filled with some power house cars…main competition came from John Debaugh's - Debaugh 1. It was also driven by Dan Chappell in 1974.
