Cliff McCandless ran this awesome looking Devin in Mod 3 in the early 70's. Snagged some hill records...and a got an FTD at the 1971 Jefferson Hill Climb. I've seen photos of this car recently...Cliff still has it and it looks exactly like it does in the photo to this day. I believe he runs it at the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.

Re: Those Great Specials...
Great photos and stories! I have really enjoyed them!
I am not presently a hillclimber, but I have run the Hershey event with my vintage race Sprite (in 2003).
Anyway, I had also seen a good number of specials "back in the day" when I ran autocross events in the NJ area .
I have scanned some of these old photos of some of those autocross specials.
I wondered if any of these cars were also involved in hillclimbs as well as the autocross events I saw them at?
Anyway, here are some.
This was taken by my friend, Bill Giltzow (probably at McGuire AFB). But I had seen this nitro-burning TR3 at lots of autocross events.
This special is based on an MGA(next three photos). I am pretty sure the driver was female. Name escapes me. These photos were taken at New Egypt Speedway.
This special had an air-cooled VW chassis and a Masonite body (next two photos). I think the guy was an Air Force guy stationed at McGuire. These were taken at New Egypt Speedway.
Another photo by Bill Giltzow. Despite the comment on the photo, the car is reported to be built by Fred DeFabio using a TVR chassis with a turbo Pinto engine.
Last photo, also by Bill Giltzow. Caption is correct.
To see all of my old car photos (including a few Formula Vee specials I was involved in) go here:

Man, I like that TR-3! And, I have enough TR-3 parts to build one like it Not that it would take a lot of TR-3 parts to do it
