I doubt it was a V8, Modified 2 was for 1300cc to 2500cc engines.

If it was under 2500 it would have even been the smaller of the two available corvair engines if my memory is correct

Couldn't have been as simple as an open exhaust?

Here is the winged special of Larry Long...gotta love the purpose built "wing" cars! I believe this is/was Mazda powered as well.

PHA veteran Jeff Whitmoyer shared some info with me pertaining to the Modified Corvairs that ran in the 70's.

" I wanted to share a little info on a V8 Corvair that was running in the mid 70's. Somewhere between 75 & 77 there was a Corvair running with a Buick/Rover V8 in it. As I recall the engine was ~3.5litres displacement which should have put the car in Mod III (as I remember classifications from that era). I also recall the car being involved in a shunt somewhere around Turn 8 or 9 at Duryea. I remember looking at the car with astonishment as it puked coolant from a crumpled radiator or punctured hose while sitting at Turn 9(off the course). Took a few minutes to figure out that it was a transplant.
As I'm writing this I'm thinking that the Mod II Corvair may have had a Porsche powerplant stuffed into it, or else was running the Turbo version of the Corvair flat 6. I don't believe there was anywhere else to put Turbo'd cars back then."

The Paul Furst car could be the Mod II car Jeff is talking about....I'll get the Mod III car ID'ed and posted ASAP.

Well...the Modified III Corvair was run by a Pat Fetterman. Sad thing is...I have nothing more on this car or driver. 1976 season...he came in second behind Jake Symanovich at Pagoda.

he Body I used to build BRAND X came from the remnants of a car that Myron Munchak had left after flying over "The Jump" at Weatherly and landing in the trees and underbrush. It consisted of many pieces which I had to re-assemble after buying them from him. I'd already built the "bird-cage" chassis and the cockpit area was 3" longer than his doors, so I extended them by that amount. The nose-section of the body also needed some NACA air-vents cut into it, behind the front-mounted radiator, to aid the air-flow through the cooling-fins. For hillclimbs, the car had only a one-gallon "weight-saving" fuel-tank because the engine could run for 6 miles on that gallon under full throttl.

Ron; BRAND X ran on MICHELIN X street-tires and, since the car was somewhat "tail-heavy", I managed to slide it off the course backwards on Weatherly's first righthand sweeper at the top of that long uphill-straight from the starting-line. The only damage to the car was that very small dent in the aluminum portion of the underbody that you can see immediately behind the left-front wheel in your photo !
