Watkins Glenn Vintage Grand Prix

Post by tupdegrove »

Attended the event for the first time this year and were guests of Gregg Frey who ran SVRA in group 8. I was at the track most of Friday but made it back to down around 6pm for the 60th anniversary of the Grand Prix. Noticed a few hillclimbers in the re-enactment and on the track. Although I spent most of my time with Gregg Frey, I did manage to shoot a bunch of photos which can be seen at http://buyphotonow.zenfolio.com. Look under Recently Added and then 08WGVintage. I'd love to know what some of those "can-am" cars are in group 7 near the end of the photos.

Enjoy,

And for those of you who missed this event, but would still like to see some vintage racers at The Glen in '08, it isn't too late!

The Vintage Racer Group (VRG) will hold their Fall vintage races at The Glen on October 17th - 19th, 2008

Here's their flyer:

http://www.vrgonline.org/EVENTS/WATG/08WATGFlyer.pdf

Here's another info page on the event:

http://www.vrgonline.org/EVENTS/WATG/08WATGFacts.pdf

Althought this is a vintage event, VRG will partner with VARAC, the Canadian club, that offers a semi-vintage "G70" class for cars built up to 1988 (so many newer cars may be OK).
If you're interested in running your car at this event, review the sheet above and contact our race chair, Bob Girvin at

bob@vrgonline.org

or call him at 508-429-2818 (not too late or too early please).

This is a non-spectator event, but I am pretty sure they still need some volunteers to work. Contact Bob (above) for more info (but please don't just show up without making arrangments with Bob.....we'd hate to see you turned away at the gate because you weren't "on the list").

And while I'm at it, don't forget the Thunderbolt Historics THIS weekend at NJMP in South Jersey (September 19th - 21st, 2008). This IS a spectator event with tickets available at the gate and will include a vintage airshow. I'm towing down there wiht my Sprite later today.

SPeaking of Joel's Cobra Daytona , a lot of people take exception with these "kit"cars being raced in "Vintage" races. They 're only six "original" Cobra Daytonas. But now Ole Shell is granting a "few" more vin numbers for people shelling out $175,000.00 each for a "new" Cobra Daytona. Just because you can get a "new" "old" vin number, doesn't make the car "Vintage". It's a beautiful "recreation" but ALL of the parts were mfg. in the last 2 years! Where does the "Vintage " come in???

Just my 2cents.....
Rich

PS: It was great to see Jack Deren at the Glen. Jack was an "original" CAN AM mechanic for Oscar'a McLaren, back in the day! A wealth of info about CAN Am cars. Just speaking with him is like being in a history book of sportscar racing! True gentleman!
