PHA Drivers at the PVGP

Post by TKnorr »

This past weekend, ten former and current PHA hillclimbers competed in the Pittsburg Vintage Grand Prix...Steve Hirschtritt, Bob Fairbanks, Walt Peterson, Glen Hoffman, Scott Janson, Joe Hoover, Paul Behofist, Dave Smith, and Tom and Garth Knorr. The circuit is very much like a hillclimb but goes all the way around. Garth had two podium finishes (3rd in both) in the British Heritage Race and his Group Race both of which had 31 entries. He did this without 1st and 2nd gear!!! The in car video below was the British Heritage Race in the rain. You can see the lack of 2nd gear had a significant effect coming our of the straw bale chicane and the serpentine.

Nice driving especially on a wet road! Anyone who has been there knows that video does not fully convey just how tricky and treacherous this course is. Note that except for the exchange early in the first lap Garth did not get passed, and there were many cars with a lot more money in them behind him for the remainder of the race. Well done, guys!
