June 19 is Father's Day, but it's also the 51st anniversary of the passing of one of racing's relatively unsung heroes - Jimmy Bryan.
Jimmy was a 3 time national champion and one time Indy 500 winner. Besides driving open wheel cars on the championship trail he also drove stock cars and sports cars. He's also my namesake.
"My Hero My Friend" is the true story of a boy growing up down the street from a national hero in the '50's, but it's also very much the story of a boy and his dad. It was published 20 years ago but recently re-released.
I don't get a cut of sales, but I recommend it anyway. Read it, pass it along to your Dad/Kid, and say "thanks for going to the races with me", I did and I'm glad.
