SCCA Time Trial & Hillclimb Driver License Changes

Postby Rich Rock » Thu Feb 07, 2019 8:45 pm

It was just confirmed to me that SCCA will be issuing Hillclimb Driver licenses as well as Time Trials Driver licenses this year. The old terminology no longer exists. Now, "Time Trials" means a competition for fastest lap time on a track and Hillclimb is not a Trime Trial. Instead, it's simply a Hillclimb. This is part of SCCA's effort to give Hillclimb its own identity, separate from Time Trials.

All PHA drivers should definitely be sure to have both licenses

Here's my understanding of how it will work:

You will need a Hillclimb Driver license or Novice permit (the same permit we currently use) to compete in a Hillclimb. BUT.... there will be a phase-in period during which anyone with a current "Time Trials Driver" license will be allowed to compete at a Hillclimb. This is intended to accommodate people whose renewal date is later in the calender year. Your renewal date is when you should request both a Hillclimb Driver License and a Time Trials License. If you don't want to wait until your renewal date, you can request the change at any time.

If your renewal date is during our season, I recommend that you take care of it as early as possible.

If you've recently renewed and were issued a Time Trials Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced License, you should keep that license but also request a Hillclimb Driver License before our season starts.

The new time Trials License is free, but the Hillclimb License comes with the usual fee and medical form requirements.

As I mentioned earlier, be sure to get both licenses.

To make it happen, go to https://timetrials.scca.com/pages/driver-eligibility Answer some questions there, and be sure to state your desire to be issued a Hillclimb Driver License. Be sure to mention PHA in your request.

Obviously this is all new. While I think it's going to work out just fine, there may be some things that weren't considered and need to be tweaked. Just be patient please. If for some reason it takes more than one try, be assured that any problems will get solved. The people running this program really do care about PHA.

If you have any issues or questions, I'm here to help:-)

Thanks,

Rich,

For those of us who are in the renewal process right now, do you have a phone number and contact name at National who we should speak with for the details?

Ken,

No I don't have the name of anyone special in membership. Just know that it might happen that the first person you talk to doesn't know anything about this yet. That should change as the week goes on.

Anyone who is not going through the renewal process and just wants to get a Hillclimb license or the new Time Trial license should use the online form. The people handling that are definitely up to speed right now.

When I made the original post last Thursday I mentioned that SCCA might decide to tweak some things.

Well, SCCA has decided to tweak some things. For now, the issuing of Hillclimb licenses is on hold. It's nothing bad, it's just a little different from the original plan, and it "might" get tweaked again before it's finalized.

The most important thing everyone needs to know, and this was stressed to me by National, is that nobody is going to get told they can't run because of some licensing error on National's part. And, to remember that our hillclimb season doesn't start for almost 4 months. Plenty of time to get things sorted out. They do, however, plan to have the process refined within the next couple weeks.

I think everything will get worked out and it will be fine, we just need to be patient.

Thanks,
Rich

I have current Time Trial licenses with both NASA and SCCA (WDCR), but have never done a hill climb, so i'm subscribing for news as it develops.

I am new to this forum. I have competed in the NEHA series since 2004, won my class championship 5 times and run CTTC twice. I also worked with Don Taylor as wrecker crew at NEHA events for a lot of years while both of us also competed, did a fair bit to update to the hillclimb communications equipment, worked tech with Don at NEHA CTTC, STPR and NEFR events. Two years ago I moved down to NC as my wife and I retired to the mountains. Since then (in 2018) I drove several SEDIV Time Trials as well as Chase The Dragon and I have the standard SCCA Time Trials Drivers license...or did until 2019, when it was changed to Intermediate Time Trial license (as the SCCA started mucking about with things). My friend Ted Theodore has done a number of PHA events as has my friends Sherm Baumann and Butch King. Ted is working on me to do some PHA events and as I will probably not make the long tow to Vermont anytime soon, I am excited to give some PHA events a try.

I learned the SCCA was making up this Hillclimb license literally 2 weeks after renewing my SCCA TT license (I have it mainly to be able to do SCCA hilllcimbs). I found the link here on this thread and followed it. At that time they had (and still have) no helpful info regarding hillclimb licenses, so I filled out the "Time Trials Driver License Request" on the page, requesting a hillclimb license. That was 2 weeks ago. One Jon Krolewicz responded almost immediately and basically said to hang on another week, info would be coming out. That was the last I heard from him directly, so I went looking today o see if ther was any updates.

As of today this is what I have found.... There is a web page for SCCA Hillclimb at https://www.scca.com/pages/hill-climb. There is no mention of licensing and the links on that page are TBD except the "Hillclimb Rules" and "Hillclimb Organizer Information" which contain .pdfs. The Rules PDF lists driver eligibility requirements for 2019 SCCA Hilllclimbs as follows:

A. Those who hold a SCCA Time Trials Competition license, or
B. Those who hold a SCCA Time Trials Novice permit, or
C. Those who hold a SCCA Competition License (Novice, or Full), or
D. Those who hold a racing license from a recognized motorsports organization.

This sounds like something that may have existed somewhere else, such as in a TT document in the past.

So, as of right now, Feb 20, 2019, there is no way as far as I can tell to get an SCCA Hilllcimb license. That is unless there is a secret document or web page somewhere...

Welcome Walter!

SCCA is still working on the Hillclimb license process, it's just taking time. As mentioned earlier in this thread, I feel confident that things will work out just fine, we all just need to be patient.

I received an email today from Jon Krolewicz regarding Hillclimb licensing. SCCA issued me a new license with both Time Trial and Hillclimb endorsements, and he sent me a .pdf copy.

That means the process Is moving along. I would suspect that others who followed the suggestion at the start of this thread and contacted the SCCA about this will be receiving similar followup email.

I just renewed my membership online. Called them a few minute later and talked to someone in membership and told them I need the time trial and hillclimb licenses on it. That was it. Easy!

Yes, things are starting to happen. If it hasn't happened for you yet, be assured that it will. Patience.

And remember, your current license will be good for this season, guaranteed. You don't really need to do anything if you already have a novice permit or time trial license!

Should a person new to his/her first hillclimb event request a Novice Log Book or Participation Log Book from National or will they be available from the event's chief driving instructor?

Matt,

Your advanced TT Driver license will be accepted to enter the PHA events. Welcome!

Dave, et al,

A new person will need either one of those books. The new "participation log books" have not been printed/made available yet. I'll let you know when that happens. In the meantime, BMR has enough of the "Novice Permit" books to get through Jefferson, Pagoda, and probably Duryea. Weatherly has enough to get through their Spring event. They will be available at onsite registration/checkin at those events. I'm not sure about Giants, still waiting to hear from them.
