Vintage Poster

Post by UK_Sub »

Hi there,
I've registered here to find out a bit more info on these posters I spotted for sale on ebay...

Image

Does anyone know what year they were produced and more importantly, who the artist was?

Here's the link to the posters on ebay;

I look forward to hearing from you,
Simon

I've contacted the Poster printers - a company called Globe in Maryland, who have recently been acquired by the Maryland Institute College of Art. They came back with the following info;

Globe opened in 1929. According to the perpetual calendar Fri. July 31 happens on these years during Globe's operation: 1931, 1936, 1942, 1953, 1959, 1964, 1970, 1981, 1987, 1992, 1998, 2009.

Unfortunately, they don't know who the artist is, but I've sent them the link to the other posters in the series, so maybe this might help.

I'm guessing the posters were likely produced in the 50s–60s.

Any more info on this would be gratefully received.

Thank you,
Simon

The car looks like a Saab 93 which went into production in 1956. So you can eliminate the dates prior to that. I would guess that 1959 or 1964 are most likely.

A quick look through the results posted online suggest that Giant's was run on July 24/25 in 1964 and on July31 / Aug 1 in 1959. So I think 1959 is the year for the poster. WIkipedia says Roger Penske won in 1959 driving a Porsche RSK.

Thank you for the information. Do the results say whether a 93F (or indeed any 92's or 96's) was ever entered into the Giant's event? And if so, who the driver was?

Thanks again,
Simon

The Berwick road race was held on the AC and F test track in the late 1950's. I attended that race with friends and Roger Penske raced in the event. The ACF built railroad cars but during WWII they built tanks and used the track to test them. I remember driving by ACF in late 40's or early 50's and seeing a lot of tanks. ACF closed in late 50's or early 60's.
