Re: Duryea stuff

Mark, I can't disagree that formula cars are by design, somewhat more dangerous than fully caged cars like NASCAR. But formula cars have always occupied that position, and that won't change as long as drivers want to go faster than big cars can go. I should also note that every driver that has died ...

Re: Hey eveyone new to hill climbs 1988 RX7 GN 3.8.....

Polish Mt is the best test hill in America because of the loop system and the unusually large number of runs. Those facts along with a hill that offers both slow and fast corners, and a smooth road, make it just what the car developer ordered. Better be there.

Re: Giants Newspaper Coverage

Steve, Like you, I am very impressed with the Street Mod cars, and especially Dan Reed this year. That said, please let me give you a reference point when you are looking for six to eight seconds to get to FTD. It took me 23 years and three stages of home built cars to improve from my hill record ru...

Re: Giants Newspaper Coverage

My entire post was meant as a joke, but I guess my sense of humor escaped some. I took Darryl's quote in the Friday paper as a tongue in cheek remark, and thought it was pretty funny. I hillclimb for the fun of it, and would not be here if I took it too seriously. My real reason for missing Giants w...

Re: Giants Newspaper Coverage

I read the Friday paper where Darryl called me chicken for not wanting to run on the new pavement. I wanted tell everyone the reason why I did not enter. I felt it would not be good for the community if Darryl was beaten at "his " hill three years in a row, and since I plan to run the 2012...

Re: Date??

The red and white formula car is mine, and the year is 1987. The special was built and driven my my son Todd and me and was powered by a 2.3 liter VW. The chassis was a legrand formula ford with suspension from a 1973 Tui Super Vee. Todd crashed into the one way sign at the right turn at the Pagoda ...

Re: Great Article on George Bowland

The NHA work/run system works only because of their basic situation and desires. They average about 45 cars, and treat the events like autocrosses with a max of three runs per day. If the second group (afternoon) gets only two runs, then only the first two runs count for the first group. If both gro...

Re: Mt Philo Hillclimb October 16-17 2010, Vermont.

Sherman, I have read the rules and also seen the Jerry Kieft Bandit after it was modified to meet your rules. Don't know if was ever actually run through the tech group, but the bar installed around the nose and back to the main roll structure would have induced a basial skull fracture in any crash ...

Re: Mt Philo Hillclimb October 16-17 2010, Vermont.

Too bad youfolks don't accept SCCA legal Time Trial/Hillclimb open wheel cars. Every other hillclimb organization in the country does as well as the Canadians for their Knox Mountain Hillclimb. Seems if PHA, NHA, The Southern Hillclimbs, and Canada are Ok with SCCA rules, you folks might consider jo...

Re: Turn 5...OOPS!

Kurt and Bob, If 5 is not the most difficult turn on any hill I have ever run, I don't know what is. A couple of years ago I tried going as fast as I could over the hump and landed a bit sideways. Norma Oswald scolded me later for scaring her.........but she didn't have to as I was plenty worried. L...

Re: Finger/Moreck car...Eagle's Nest

Yep, car is no more. John apparently felt the wings were holding him back from making up the 4 seconds I had on him and took them off. Several people tried to talk him out of that move, but he went ahead. With about 800# less downforce in a section that has some wiggles, he left the road, hit a culv...

Re: Pagoda Stuff

This is not an unusal move for the Southern climbs, although it is for PHA. We have moved for both spectator and safety reasons at two of our hills in the past few years. I guess hills evolve like all racing venues. Becuse PHA keeps such complete records, the move just gives everyone a chance to res...

Re: Greetings from Vermont

Seth, Bob Damore described the hills well, but to be honest and as a long distance traveler to the PHA events, I can say that all the PHA hills are terrific. They are well run events with great workers and townsfolk that are very receptive to the events. I have not run any Northeast events (only bec...

Thanks PHA

A big thanks to the PHA for the flowers, and to ensure they lasted, I gave them to my kids. Also thanks to all the folks that sent me sympathy cards on the passing of my wife of 45 years, Debi. I am glad to know I have a home away from home in the PHA and look forward to seeing you all this season. ...

Today we lost a great friend and huge supporter of our hillclimb efforts. Rich Shafer died of injuries suffered when he crashed at turn three of the Crow Mt. Hillclimb near Scottsboro, AL.

Re: It's Not All Fun & Games...Hill Climb Realities

There is a time when all your mistakes come together. Two roots blowers, one on top of the other and only one prior event. Big surge problem when shifting from first to second. Damp patches (new in 1990) on the left side of the road about 80 feet from the start. Seven years of losing to John Finger,...

Polish Mt High

Another great PHA event in Flinstone last weekend with good weather and many broken records. It took a lot of hard working folks to make the event the success that it was, but I want to point out one person who carried a big load. Mike Ancas not only helped get new people to the event, but Announced...
