Interested in designing/building a car

I've been slowly preping my SVT Ford Focus for SCCA teching and eventual racing with the PHA group (hopfully). But one of my engineering college professors keeps bugging me about building a formula car. Yesterday we finally found a gap in our scheduals to talk alittle bit. He was saying that we shou...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Okay its time to put on my official hat, this is getting stupid. And yes i do hold official licenses from the SCCA. You are doing a good job reading thru the rules. The class that you have found in the GCR that you want to run is ITS. Now stop and put down the GCR! Pick up the TTR and start reading...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Okay taking this from the TTR:: 11.2. CLUB TRIALS (LEVEL 2) Roll bars or cages will NOT be required in those cars prepared to Stock, Street Prepared, Street Touring or Street Mod specifications as found in the Solo rules, except for Convertibles and Targa* top automobiles. These cars must have eithe...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Alright, I guess I still don't understand fully how classing works? When I looked at this link:: http://cms.scca.com/documents/2011%20Tech/2011%20GCR-printed%20version.pdf I flipped through until I got to the classes. After scrolling through the lists I stumbled into the ITS listing of cars which is...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Roof Scoop still has to come off correct? Other than that question it looks like everything I oringinally asked was answered and thank you guys so very very much for the help. I'm sorry for the confusion but the rules are kind of written in a garbbled fashion.

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Alright from all of this I am gathering that for me to run my 2003 Ford Focus SVT in the ITS class, I will need to do this as it currently stands:: Replace Fidenza Flywheel with stock flywheel Replace Roof Scoop with non-vented steel panel 5 point harness Weld in diagonal bar in Main Hoop plane Is t...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Wow, my head is starting to spin. I said we would try to keep up but I'm not so sure now. In my opinion (and they are like ass holes, everybody has got one) You have a roll bar that qualifies for every class except GT1 and Specials in the sedan classes. Change your clutch if you want to run IT anyt...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Alright I figure this. I am building this car for the ITS class; things I know I need to change are:: Replacement of Stock Flywheel, checking to see if the roof scoop is a-okay for ducting. One thing I would also like to clear up is finding out about Engine mounts, I didn't see anything in IT rules ...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Honestly I think it would be a bigger chore to find all the screws and bolts for the panels, find a carpet, stock seats, and other things than to get a stock flywheel. I think I might just swap my flywheel out and install the Diagonal bar inside the mainhoop to be on the safe side for that. Again th...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

So to run SMF all I need is carpet and door panels? and to run ITS I just need a stock Flywheel? But in SMF all my mods are legal?

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

So far that seems to be the ONLY thing that is pushing me to another class. Its gonna bite if I have to swap in a stock flywheel just fit into the ITS class, but since the safety and everything else seems to be a little more stringent with the GT3 class I might just take the 11 hours of work and swa...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Well I answered my question about the roof scoop, I might just have to replace that panel with an unvented one, again I would love if a Tech offical would chime in here. I read the fresh air ducting rule which stated that FA ducts may be place in the driver and or passenger side windows and not obst...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

Well I just hit a little hiccup, I found out the car falls into ITS Ford Focus SVT and all that jazz, skimming through that I found everything for my car falls into that category just fine. Except my Flywheel, and my roof scoop. After reading the rules for ITR and ITS it appears that I can run any c...

So I don't need the diagonal in the main hoop? Who does the tech inspections so I can send him/her an email with pictures just to verify?

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

How would you guys recommend putting the diagonal bar inside the main hoop since I have the Harness bar in? Can the diagonal be cut into two and then have gussets welded around all four sides? Or do I have to drill through the harness bar and bend it out of the way so I can slip the diagonal in and ...

Re: Very interested in getting behind the wheel!

He said autox Hankook slicks. Hankook makes a DOT slick as well as a racking slick, and most people use the DOT slick version for autox (and call this a slick even though it technically isn't). If he was talking about the DOT slick, the tire should be fine in IT. Tires are easily changed anyway. Ye...
